A few thousand feet of elevation change or a quick jaunt an hour or so down a canyon or pass can drastically change the weather. I often go from full on winter to near summer temps daily allowing varied activities throughout the course of a single day.

You can wake up to snow, head out for a ride only to have to shed layers down to base levels. It can be 20 degrees but when the sun pops out it can feel 60. My rides here have required far less gear than any winter TN ride. Just a wool layer and a wind block most days.

I find myself on the 26" more and more. It's not about wheel size as much as it is open frame space, chain stay length, and fun-factor. Conditions can change drastically from one side of the mountain to the next, best to be prepared and I hate riding with backpacks. 650B, 29, 27.5+, 700x40, 700x34, 650b x 47, whatever size wheels it doesn't fucking matter. Just pedal and explore with a Cheshire Cat shit-eating grin on your face the whole damn time.
