Contrast

Last week was a good week. 4 days of riding with one of those days offering both road and dirt. Contrast to this week, one day of riding and an evening watching some crit racing. Good, but could've been better. But that is what the past 2 weeks have been all about: contrast.

For instance:

  • Sign title for new car, get parking ticket notice in mail for missing car.
  • Schedule an appointment Thursday morning for the Lemonaero, get call from another shop confirming appointment for missing car for the same day and time.
  • Pay off new car, get registered letter requesting $2000 or my car gets sold by the weekend (yeah the first tow company I called (and called repeatedly and whom the police also called) had my car just not legally or done by the books so they waited not a week, or 2 weeks, or 1 month, but nearly 3 months so they could force me to pay big bucks with little time before they could "legally" sell my car.)
  • Dream Levi got 13 minutes on the group and Lance lost 13 due to a hamstring issue Saturday night, watch as Lance loses 13 minutes to the group due to several crashes and bad luck Sunday morning.

See contrast.

Tomorrow is more contrast, literally. CT scan of the liver with contrast. I'm hoping this one doesn't follow suit since Tuesday we had a case of a patient going to CT and having an allergic reaction to the dye and going into severe anaphylaxis. Yep, don't need that. Stay tuned...

Accidental Aesthetics

Another monkey death.

Before heading off to Illinois for the holiday weekend, I discovered my '06 BB7 front break was on the brink of death. Luckily I was saved by a 4th of the July sale and a new bb7 was on the way and scheduled to be in before this weekend. Earlier this week, plans for a long day in the woods with a post ride swimming hole (summer rules in full effect) were set in motion. This meant my current gear would leave me suffering for the day unless I could remedy my current lack of cog options. My flooded/stolen cogs are out of stock in the sizes I need so I hustled to get a replacement 19t in time. By Friday night everything came together and the bike was ready for a full day of action.

Ti colored '06 rear.

black is the new silver '09 front.

Being on forced frugal fundage, I only ordered a single replacement brake as the rear one is still going strong. As luck would have it the disparity of model year colors would notch me another Cooperization point. The rear matches the ti color and the front now blends aesthetically with the black carbon fork and red & black of the DT Swiss hub. Accidentally aesthetics.

Ready to head out.

Ever wonder why I take so many photos of the bikes on the rack before we leave?

For insurance purposes.

Rack fail.

And to think he was just bragging about how his homemade el-cheapo rack build has lasted so many years despite being designed as a temporary solution. Lock-tite fail or MJ forgot to tighten the bolt fail? I'm betting the latter. Just don't tell Jeffy.

The Hippopotatree on the new road bypass section to Moss Creek.

Temps were on the hot side, but the humidity was finally bearable, making the ride along the N/S trail perfect. Trail conditions were pretty sublime however several sandy corners were super sketch along with some recent deep gravel refilling. A few trees down, but nothing like the ice storm damage. The trail is such a wonderful trail. Point to point trails just flow so well and give the feeling of being out there.

Flutterby's seemed to like me yesterday.

Must be because I'm so sweet.

The lake was having drag boat races Saturday and as we got into Pisgah Point we stopped alongside the lake edge to watch a few runs. Last year about this time it was 8ball and I on the N/S trail late in the evening trying to escape the heat by timing it around a night time finish. The drag boats were there then too, along with a drunk couple fornicating in the woods just feet from the trail. Like I said before nothing like a point to point trail to make you feel "out there."

Trail side slider adjustment.

We did an out and back on the N/S then hit the Canal Loop up for a lap after refilling bottles. The Canal Loop used to be a Tsali-esque rollercoaster of a trail. Very beginner friendly and fun. Not so much anymore. It's really chopped up and become a beat down. It could have been my low blood sugar haze combined with the hottest time of day, but I was hating life for much of the loop. Though, had my stomach let me consume some calories I'd probably have felt differently.

Lake overlook.

Post ride we hit up the Moss Creek Recreational area and enjoyed some cold beverages and watching the smoking chicks in bikinis on the beach.  We relaxed and cooled off in the deep cool water of Kentucky lake as the "tides were coming in." A few kids playing near us on an inflatable boat thought the waves coming off the boats were the tide. The one in the boat told MJ that he better not flip his boat over or he'd be madder than a bull with a red flag. Then we got to listen to a mother bitch about her daughter bitching while daddy just paddled farther out in his raft. And the bikini girls were really smoking, not the smoking hot kind, the filtered camel kind with skin of fine Corinthian leather. MJ thought he caught site of a free boob too, but alas, it turned out to be a baby's head. Welcome to Kentucky.

3 Stage Thursday

Trails are extremely dry and dusty, a rarity in the MidSouth.

26 miles in the climbing heat this morning. Twenty miles of hills with 6 miles of flat-like terrain. It was 84 when I left and 94 when I arrived. Post work the plan was to head to the Taproom for pints with T.roy and Kevin, but when I stepped outside of the windowless cavern of work I was greeted with rain, dark skies, thunder, and lightening all around except for North. I live North. So I bailed on the beverages in hopes to beat the weather home. 26 miles of Flanders-esque roads (hilly, wet, slick, and crowded) at tempo in the scorching heat. Eyes stinging from the sweat due to the lack of an evaporative wind.  I beat the weather. Though the weather was tracking South-ish. Doh!

Taking a break lake side...

So 52 miles ridden in two stages 8 hours apart and I missed out on pints with friends, what was a guy to do.  Oh yeah, tend to a mopey, neglected puppy who was mad that we missed out on our run Weds night due to mandatory bike maintenance and super wound up from being locked inside all day why the carpet cleaners were around.

so the Monkey can cool down. Better check for leeches.

So after nearly melting on the way home I swapped bikes and headed out to the pit with the pup to get our dirt on. 5 miles was about all the pup could muster in the heat so we spent most of the time playing in Leech Lake. I think he's forgiven me for last night, or at least forgotten last night ever existed.

Wanna Play Ball, do ya? do ya? huh huh? I wanna play ball.

Not quite beers with buds, but any day in the woods with the pup is a good day. Having nearly lost him to a car I'll take all the time I can get.  Though if I keep up the solo single day stage racing I'm going to have to add some flatter trails in the back. Best part is that not only was today my longest riding in weeks, I suffered no ill effects of the gut. Hopefully we're getting things turned around. CT scan with die of my liver next week to check the mysterious nodule-not-nodule.

Fuzzy Moments in Time

The Limited Edition PapaTed Tall Boy.

Didn't take long for the swing to go back to full swung. So while I have a few spare moments before bed I figured I'd throw out a quick update/catch up of the goings on.  When I last left our intrepid travelers they were captive in one of the humidity drenched flyover states. I failed to capture the boat ride/fireworks viewing at Oak Run or the massive catfish cleaning competition between me and my Uncle Larry (he won) or the Moose room and cookout at Uncle Jeff's, but trust me the photos would have been awesome.

Waiting on PapaTed.

Humidity does odd things to one's mind. Like thinking sitting around in sweltering temps trying not to sweat off a double stick tape mustache waiting for your father to come home with Grandma for a cookout is a good idea.

PapaTed Arrives, macaroni salad in tow.

Only PapaTed would think going to get Grandma for the cookout includes mowing her lawn first. Leave it to a retiree to think he'd better get to it before Monday rolls around. Wouldn't want to interfere with weekday nap times.

Pointing out to the oblivious.

All eyes on the grill.

ooo, sparklers.

The good H. (evil H. in the background tormenting the dogs. Video evidence coming soon)

Recycling bin. Looks like a good time was had or lots of bad decisions were made.

Being the 4th of July, I wanted to get out to visit the grave sites of my veteran grandfathers. While walking through Wal-greens searching for a misplaced Grandmother, H. noticed some 4th inspired flower bundles and we picked up a set to decorate the graves. One North of town, the other South.

My road shoes having bitten the dust months ago, old mtb pedals and shoes got called back into active duty.

The mirror fell off the windshield of the Lemonaero again. A victim of roof parking heat I reckon. Or perhaps a cruel joke being played repeatedly by my father? I'll let you decide. Not enjoying driving with 2 missing mirrors in rush hour traffic, I decided it was a sign to get back to commuting via human power. My commute suitable bikes however are severely neglected as it takes most my limited spare time and available funds to keep the mountain bike up and running smoothly. So I took the night off from running the pup and spent some time prepping a bike for tomorrow since it's a rare bike friendly start schedule tomorrow. Opportunity knocks, I'm riding.

Sharky.

Gravely. Hickman county grit I believe.

Think it has a few more months left?

MTB is solid though. Priorities in order.

And a final memory of this week to leave for your viewing pleasure... My ever expanding year of "firsts" expands yet again. The local swimmin' hole has been swum in for weeks. Jokes of leeches (quoted from 'Stand by Me' and 'A Series of Unfortunate Events') turned into reality Tuesday night.

Leeches!!!
Mmmm... tastes like chicken.

Relaxation Re-laps

A long drive home called for some re-relaxin'. Night laps and a lake dip capped the Holiday weekend off perfectly. Back to the daily grind today, but luckily the weekend is only 4 days away this week.

Cobbles today. Slumlord is recording the stage for me. Small victories. Life is good.

Active Relax-ivity

The boys chillin' between relax-tivities.

We are enjoying the cool front over the middle of the country immensely, thanks Ma' Nature. Open windows, no stale aired A/C, cool breeze feel-me-good in the shade, and a perfect temp for screen porch chillin' and Belgium waffle breakfasts.

An early morning swim for the dogs out at Lake Storey along with some free romp time and a lake shoreline walk helped flush out the all day in a car antsies still lingering in the pup. The water temp was perfect, the shade refreshing, and the sunshine much needed. Nothing like a relax-cation trip home vs. the recent run of funeral visits. It feels good just to be.

I said PLAY WITH ME!!!

Happy Fourth y'all.

Thursday's Child is full of Whoa!

A rare and unique opportunity allowed me not one, but two rides out back with the Monkey today. An early morning ride and a post work ride in beautiful low humidity summer weather. I mixed the video to Wolfmother's Vagabond but YouTube pulled the audio (thanks WMG). I had to select one of their free music offerings so deal with the music, it was better than 3:49 mins of silence.

Sorry about the jiggly camera (it get's a little better towards the end). The Backcountry Research Weight Weenie Belt, rubberband, and Swiftwick Merino one did an ok job but not near go-pro quality. Perhaps I can get Mr. Backcountry Research to stitch me up a camera bra. H. suggested camera "holster", but I want the BR Camerbro. A bitchin' Camerbro!
